The Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community (EAC) states its objectives to be developing policies and programmes aimed at widening and deepening cooperation among the partner states in the political, economic, social and cultural fields, research and technology, and defence, security and legal and judicial affairs, for their mutual benefit.

The Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community (EAC) is aimed at the strengthening and consolidation of the long-standing political, economic, social, cultural and traditional ties and associations between the peoples of the partner states, so as to promote people-centred mutual development of these ties. Human security, one of the objectives of the treaty, is a concept growing in prominence in the transitional justice discourse. Human security is a human right; it refers to the security of people and communities, as opposed to the security of states.

The East African Community (EAC) Strategy on Regional Peace and Security states that the EAC remains committed and dynamic in order to respond to the nature and form of ever-evolving security threats. Advancement in technology, knowledge dispersal and globalisation in all aspects continue to influence crime types and trends. The strategy serves as a guiding framework and yet can be adjusted to accommodate emerging security challenges.

EAC Gender Policy

The East African Community (EAC) Gender Policy provides guidance on institutionalising gender strategies in the EAC integration process, in addition to ensuring that the rights of women and men, and boys and girls, are promoted, protected and realised on an equal basis. The policy further aims to mainstream gender concerns in the planning and budgetary processes of all sectors in EAC organs, institutions and partner states.

EAC Climate Change Policy Framework

The overall objective of the East African Community (EAC) Climate Change Policy is to guide partner states and other stakeholders in the preparation and implementation of collective measures to address climate change in the region, while ensuring sustainable social and economic development. Africa is the continent most vulnerable to climate-related instability. It is therefore imperative that its impacts are considered in the post-conflict and transitional contexts.
