Akosombo Agreement

12 September 1994

The Akosombo Agreement supplements and amends the Cotonou Agreement. The Parties agreed on another ceasefire and extended the actions that would be considered to breach the ceasefire. The Parties agreed to disarm and encamp in accordance with a new schedule and mandated the Liberia National Transitional Government to begin the formation of appropriate national security structures to facilitate the disarmament process. The Parties called on the Government and international partners to finance the demobilisation, retraining, rehabilitation and reintegration of all former combatants to normal social and community life. The Parties agreed that planning for restructuring and training of AFL will be the responsibility of the Liberia National Transitional Government and international partners. The Parties further established a five-member Council of State in which executive powers would be vested, and amended the provisions regarding the Transitional Legislative Assembly.
