Background: Stephen Buchanan-Clarke is a research consultant and peacebuilding practitioner at the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR), where he manages the Activating Reconciliation in the Central African Republic project. His areas of expertise include transitional justice, peace and security, and countering violent extremism. He has worked on both research and capacity-building projects in the Central African Republic, Burundi, Kenya and Nigeria and written extensively on the topic of peace and security in Africa, with a particular focus on transnational security threats. He is a co-editor of the book Extremisms in Africa (2018) and regularly writes for a variety of media outlets.
